With only a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re finding yourself in a similar boat, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London prior to your journey at Imperial, enabling you to relish the experience of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you get there weeks in advance or just shortly before the term kicks off, here’s the wisdom I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Arrange your housing ahead of time to evade costly hotel fees. I was lucky, but not everyone is as the prime choices disappear quickly. Strive to locate a residence close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for early classes.

Life admin: managing the necessary basics

Upon reaching London, tackle these essentials quickly:

Money transfers – being an international scholar, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help to prevent poor exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one swiftly to ensure data availability for navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account establishment – some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday expenses and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – this is vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.

Your initial week at Imperial is the most significant

Your first week at Imperial plays a key role in your student experience. It’s the perfect time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and forged some of my closest friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society stands. Your initial week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.

Navigating London: travel wisely

<pDuring my first week, I was clueless about the Tube or bus systems, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was memorable yet chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel at a reasonable cost on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains a fantastic way to experience the city and unearth hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the outset. Identifying a comfort location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I unwind. My other spot is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I enjoy a film weekly.

Seek out your own comfort zones, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a riverside seat. These haven spaces are more valuable than you might expect.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and at home. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred food and coffee places.

Check out well-known landmarks, discover free museums, and savor the view from a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your finest memories will stem from a little adventure in getting lost!

Final pointers before plunging into Imperial student life

Acquire a reusable bag – shops typically charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective against gusty rain.

Embrace peculiar events – they create fantastic stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – everyone does initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <a href="

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was initially quite daunting due to its expanse and rapid pace.
