The city felt enormous, bustling, and incredibly fast, leaving me uncertain about where to start with just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand. If this is your upcoming experience, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you truly enjoy your inaugural time in the city.

Whether you’re arriving weeks early or just prior to the term, here’s the guidance I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.

First and foremost: secure accommodation

Sidestep the steep costs of hotels by organizing your lodging early. I was lucky, but not everyone finds this opportunity, as the most desirable options disappear quickly. Strive to locate a residence near your campus or a dependable Tube line – long commutes are not favorable for morning lectures.

Essential tasks: handling the necessary affairs

Once you land in London, focus on these important tasks:

Handling money transfers – International students seek cost-effective methods to send money from their home countries. Services such as Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.

Obtaining a UK SIM card – Data is crucial for navigation, so acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.

Establishing a bank account – Some banks necessitate a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and favorable for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Collecting your student ID card – This is essential for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as early as possible.

The initial week at Imperial is vital

Your inaugural week at Imperial is critical for your student experience. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join in on activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel shy, make an effort to engage. I did and formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was clueless about the Tube or buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. While memorable, it was chaotic – don’t repeat my error. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Exploring on foot is still an excellent way to experience the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures you’ll uncover by wandering.

Discover your comfort zones

London can be emotionally taxing, particularly at the outset. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a local park where I retreat daily to unwind. Another is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.

Identify your own havens, whether a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spaces offer an opportunity to relax and recharge, which is more valuable than you might think.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and home. Find the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favored spots for food or coffee.

Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Spend your weekends uncovering the city. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering a bit off course!

Final pointers before immersing in Imperial student life

Utilize a reusable bag – stores typically charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle against the wind.

Participate in unique events – they create fantastic stories.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the start.

You’re not expected to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle.
