The cacophony, pace, and expanse were intense. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to undergo this experience, don’t panic. Here’s how to transition smoothly into life in London before commencing your studies at Imperial, ensuring you can savor the city.

Whether you arrive weeks ahead or just in time for term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure accommodation

To avoid pricey hotel costs, organize housing in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for all. Prime locations disappear quickly, so seek something close to campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.

Key administrative tasks

Upon your arrival, tackle these crucial matters:

Money transfers – International students require an economical method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut offer favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Data is essential for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan right away.

Bank account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital options like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Set up an account for daily expenses and part-time employment payments.

Student ID card – This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Get it as soon as possible.

The significance of your first week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital. You’ll connect with flatmates, fellow students, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, get involved. I made lifelong friends during campus tours and society gatherings. This week will set the pace for your university journey.

Navigating London smartly

During my first week, I trekked nine kilometres across London due to misunderstandings with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to make travel cheaper. Walking remains the best way to uncover the city and its hidden treasures.

Identify your favorite spots

London can be a lot to digest. A comforting space is beneficial – mine happens to be a local park. I go there daily to unwind. The O2, just 10 minutes away, is another preferred venue for films and relaxation. Find your own places, like a café or bookstore, where you can recharge.

Discover the metropolis

Get accustomed to the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Pinpoint nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining spots you enjoy. Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and ride a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from occasional detours.

Final advice for your start at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – Shops impose charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas often falter against strong winds.

Join unconventional events – They generate memorable stories.

Don’t fret if you feel lost – It’s a common feeling initially.

You don’t have to have it all together on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of my situation. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus trip and Tesco excursion at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged <

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing When I first stepped into London, the city’s vastness struck me.
