With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you are about to face something similar, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before beginning at Imperial, enabling you to embrace your new life in the city.

Whether you’re arriving weeks ahead or just in time for the term, here’s the counsel I wish I’d received upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotel expenses by arranging your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the top choices vanish quickly. Strive to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent long trips for early morning classes.

Essential Life Admin Tasks

Upon your arrival, focus on these important tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method for transferring funds from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – you’ll need data for navigation, so obtain a UK SIM card and data plan right away.

Bank account – some banks might ask for a UK address, yet digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it promptly.

Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal for your student journey. You will meet roommates, peers, and potential friends. Dive into Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities you’re passionate about.

Even if you are reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I made close friends during campus tours and society meetings. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was an unforgettable experience but quite chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent method to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Spots

London can be emotionally intense initially. Having a comfort zone helps; mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, is another cherished spot for lounging with a film.

Discover your own havens, whether it’s a cafe, a bookstore, or a bench by the river, to relax and recharge.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with the areas around your campus and residence that you’ll frequent. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and meander without a plan. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from getting slightly lost!

Final Insights Before Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – shops frequently impose charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective against rain driven by wind.

Participate in unique events – they yield wonderful stories.

Don’t be alarmed if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal initially.

You don’t have to have everything under control on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco shopping trip at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By <a href="https

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was a lot to take in; the city felt enormous, noisy, and bustling.
