Upon arriving in London, I found it to be immense and daunting. The atmosphere felt vibrant and swift, leaving me uncertain about how to start with just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here\u2019s how to kick off your new life in London prior to your time at Imperial, enabling you to relish being a newcomer in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you come weeks ahead of schedule or just prior to the term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had been given upon my initial arrival.<\/p>\n

Secure Your Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by arranging your living situation early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top options disappear rapidly. Target a place near your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative Matters: Essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, make these tasks a priority:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 If you\u2019re an international student, identify an economical method to transfer funds from home. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM Card \u2013 Make sure you acquire a UK SIM card quickly to have data for navigation.<\/li>\n
  • Bank Account \u2013 Some banking institutions necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n

    At first, I was perplexed by the Tube and buses, which led me to walk nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to reduce your Tube and bus fares.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city and find hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally taxing. Having a favorite spot can be beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park where I unwind daily. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own places, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to recharge and take a breather.<\/p>\n

    Go Adventuring!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get familiar with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee spots.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic sites, check out free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for a great view. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from the experience of wandering a bit off the beaten path!<\/p>\n
