The atmosphere felt vibrant and swift, leaving me uncertain about how to start with just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s how to kick off your new life in London prior to your time at Imperial, enabling you to relish being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you come weeks ahead of schedule or just prior to the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given upon my initial arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by arranging your living situation early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top options disappear rapidly. Target a place near your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.

Administrative Matters: Essentials

Once you arrive in London, make these tasks a priority:

Money Transfers – If you’re an international student, identify an economical method to transfer funds from home. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Make sure you acquire a UK SIM card quickly to have data for navigation.

Bank Account – Some banking institutions necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID Card – This card provides access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial: Its Significance

The initial week at Imperial is vital for your experience as a student. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and get engaged with your interests.

Even if you tend to be reserved, make a point to join in. I did, and I connected with some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week will shape the trajectory of your university experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

At first, I was perplexed by the Tube and buses, which led me to walk nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to reduce your Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city and find hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing. Having a favorite spot can be beneficial – mine is a local park where I unwind daily. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly.

Discover your own places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to recharge and take a breather.

Go Adventuring!

Get familiar with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee spots.

Explore iconic sites, check out free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for a great view. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from the experience of wandering a bit off the beaten path!

Final Recommendations Before Starting at Imperial

Grab a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be futile in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events – they make for great anecdotes.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, get your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco outing at a time.

To learn more about my journey, read my story at Imperial.

By <a href="https://blogs.im

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon arriving in London, I found it to be immense and daunting.
