Landing in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and fast-moving. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, don\u2019t stress. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before your time at Imperial begins, enabling you to savor your new city life.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive early or just before the term, here are the tips I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

Prioritize Finding Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotel fees by arranging your accommodation in advance. I got lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. The best options vanish quickly! Aim for a location near your campus or close to an efficient Tube line to prevent long commutes to morning classes.<\/p>\n

As soon as you arrive in London, focus on these essentials:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 International students require an affordable method to transfer funds. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 It\u2019s tough to navigate a new city without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan without delay.<\/li>\n
  • Setting up a bank account \u2013 Some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. A bank account is crucial for everyday transactions and receiving payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 This card allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial is significant. It\u2019s the time when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week events to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re a bit reserved, make an effort to engage. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Be Smart with Your Travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I had little understanding of the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across the city. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares. Walking is also a fantastic way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover Your Favorite Spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense. Finding a go-to spot can provide comfort. I have a local park I visit daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just a short 10-minute journey away, where I enjoy weekly movie outings. Identify your own retreat, whether it\u2019s a cafe or a bookstore, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Explore the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas around your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining spots. Take time to see iconic landmarks, free museums, and experience a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from spontaneous adventures.<\/p>\n

    Final Advice for Beginning at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 Stores charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 Umbrellas are not effective in blustery weather.<\/li>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.<\/p>\n
