Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before your studies at Imperial begin, enabling you to fully enjoy the city.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here&#8217;s the advice I wish I had at my fingertips upon arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First things first: secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Steer clear of costly hotel expenses by arranging your living situation in advance. I was lucky, but many aren\u2019t, as the finest choices can be snapped up quickly. Strive to find a place near your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Administrative tasks: take care of the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you land in London, prioritize the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, locate a trustworthy and economical method to send money from home. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 having data is crucial for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data package shortly after your arrival.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 some banks necessitate a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Your initial week at Imperial is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your student journey. This is when you&#8217;ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Immerse yourself in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led organizations and engage in activities that speak to you.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you find it difficult to interact with others, challenge yourself to take part. I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. Your initial week will shape the rest of your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London to explore, which was hectic yet unforgettable. Avoid this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Establish your go-to spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can feel daunting, particularly at the outset. Having a comfort zone is beneficial \u2013 mine is the park close to my home, where I unwind daily. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another preferred location for me to relax with a movie.<\/p>\n<p>Discover your own comfort spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside seat, to recharge and refresh.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And make sure to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019ll frequent around campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee venues.<\/p>\n<p>Visit iconic sites, check out free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a set plan. Some of your fondest memories will stem from being a little lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Last pointers before you embark<\/strong> on Imperial student life<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Carry a reusable bag \u2013 shops typically charge for disposable ones.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof coat \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t fare well against gusty winds.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in quirky events \u2013 they create fantastic stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common feeling at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you&#8217;re reading this, you&#8217;re already ahead of where I found myself when I commenced at Imperial.
