With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to beginning at Imperial, so you can relish your new experience in the city.

Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure accommodation

Arrange housing early to steer clear of high hotel rates. I was fortunate, but options vanish rapidly! Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes are not ideal for early morning lectures.

Essential life administration

Tackle these necessities soon after arriving in London:

Money transfers – International students require economical methods to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – Data is essential for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan right away.

Bank account – Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as possible.

The significance of your inaugural week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial holds great importance. You’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, attempt to get involved. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Travel wisely in London

During my initial week, I didn’t grasp the Tube or bus systems, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably. Walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be overwhelming. Having a favorite spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park. I visit daily to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, serves as another location where I relax with a film. Discover your own spaces, like a cafe or bookstore, to recharge and refresh.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with your campus and surrounding neighborhoods. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favored dining locations. Explore famous landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for scenic views. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting a bit lost!

Final advice for commencing at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – shops charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t fare well in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events – they create great stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To find out more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time, the city seemed vast, noisy, quick-paced, and somewhat intimidating.
