Stepping into London for the very first time felt like a whirlwind. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Equipped with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re on the brink of this adventure, there’s no need to fret. Here\u2019s a guide to help you acclimate to London ahead of starting at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new experience in the city.<\/p>\n

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term beginning, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had been given.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotel bookings by arranging your accommodation early. I was lucky in this regard, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. The best housing options vanish quickly! Strive to find a place near your campus or a dependable Tube line to save time on long journeys for morning classes.<\/p>\n

Life admin: tackling the essential tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in London, take care of these necessities swiftly:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide excellent exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one right away for data usage and navigation in a new place.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 while some banks may require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater well to students. Open an account for your transactions and part-time employment earnings.<\/li>\n

    The first week at Imperial is incredibly significant. It\u2019s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I forged strong friendships during impromptu campus tours and society stands. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk through London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses. Walking remains a fantastic way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your safe havens<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the start. Seek out a comforting spot, like a local park, to unwind and recharge. My second favorite place is the O2, merely 10 minutes from my residence, where I regularly enjoy movies. Find your own cherished spots, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, a bookstore, or a bench by the river, to relax.<\/p>\n

    And don\u2019t forget to wander!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequently visit near your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and top food or coffee havens. Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a double-decker bus, and explore without a specific direction. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from adventurous detours!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before you immerse yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Get a reusable bag \u2013 stores typically impose charges for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas may not withstand windy conditions.<\/li>\n

    • Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common feeling at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you\u2019re going through this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and kick off your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
