Stepping into London for the first time was a remarkable experience. The city appeared vast, bustling, and energetic. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you are about to begin a similar adventure, there’s no need to fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can savor the city to the fullest.<\/p>\n

No matter if you arrive early or just before the semester begins, here\u2019s the insight I wish I had received when I got here.<\/p>\n

Secure Your Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your housing as early as possible to steer clear of pricey hotel stays. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the best places are taken quickly. Seek accommodation close to your campus or near an efficient Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes to early classes.<\/p>\n

Important Administrative Tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When you arrive in London, handle these crucial tasks without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 As an international student, find an affordable and trustworthy way to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • UK SIM Card \u2013 Navigating a new location without data can be difficult. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Bank Account \u2013 Although some banks require a UK address, online banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and cater to students. Establish an account for transactions and part-time job deposits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Your first week at Imperial is vital. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll connect with flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that intrigue you.<\/p>\n

          Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I formed friendships with some of my closest mates during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your initial week lays the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

          Smart Traveling in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          At first, I was clueless about the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic venture. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to explore the city more economically.<\/p>\n

          Walking remains the best way to appreciate the city and its culture, revealing hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

          Identify Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London can be daunting, particularly at the beginning. Having a go-to spot can be beneficial. For instance, my favorite is the park near my home, where I go every day to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie each week.<\/p>\n

          Discover your own comfort spots, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a bench by the riverside, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

          Discover the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Get to know the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.<\/p>\n

          Visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and explore aimlessly. Some of your fondest experiences will stem from wandering without a plan.<\/p>\n

          Final Suggestions for Life at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          • Carry a reusable bag to avoid charges for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are ineffective against the wind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • Participate in unique events for unforgettable stories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented; feeling this way initially is common.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  There’s no need to have everything figured out right from the beginning. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already further ahead than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
