Stepping foot in London was a lot to handle; everything felt enormous, noisy, and rapid. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was disoriented. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here\u2019s how to ease into London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to relish the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive in advance or just in time for term, here\u2019s the guidance I wished I had.<\/p>\n

Secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotels by booking your stay early. I had some luck, but that\u2019s not guaranteed for everyone. Opt for a location close to campus or along a reliable Tube line, as lengthy commutes can be challenging for morning classes.<\/p>\n

Take care of the basics<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a trustworthy method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one swiftly to access data and navigation in your new environment.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this is essential for gaining entry to campus facilities, libraries, and discounts for students. Acquire it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week is crucial for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Navigate London wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Don\u2019t follow my lead. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is still a fantastic way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense. Locate a calming place, such as a park, caf\u00e9, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My go-to spots are a local park and the O2, where I relax with a film.<\/p>\n

    Explore the metropolis<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with neighborhoods near your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Tour iconic landmarks, free museums, and indulge in a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished moments arise from getting slightly off track.<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before commencing at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Utilize a reusable bag \u2013 stores charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren’t very effective in breezy conditions.<\/li>\n

    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 that\u2019s perfectly normal at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already in a better position than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.<\/p>\n
