Clutching a suitcase and my Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re on the brink of experiencing this, don’t fret. Here are steps to set your new life in London on course before starting at Imperial, enabling you to relish the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Primary Focus: Arrange Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by securing accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares this fortune, as the prime choices vanish quickly! Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line—early morning lectures can be tough if you’re more than an hour away.

Administrative Tasks: Tackle Essentials

Upon your arrival in London, swiftly take care of these essentials:

Money Transfers – As an international student, find a trustworthy and affordable method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut can shield you from poor exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Having data is vital for navigating in an unfamiliar place. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan promptly after landing.

Bank Account Opening – Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID Card – This is essential for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it at your earliest convenience.

Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial holds great importance. Meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to investigate over 350 student-led clubs and societies and immerse yourself in your interests.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and made lifelong friends during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week sets the groundwork for your university journey.

Smart Travel Around London

In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, which led to me walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable—don’t replicate my experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains the superior way to experience the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by meandering around.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can initially be emotionally intensive. Having a comfort zone is beneficial—for me, it’s the park adjacent to my home. I go there daily to relax and recharge. My second favorite spot is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I enjoy weekly movies to decompress.

Identify your own places, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and rejuvenate. It proves to be more valuable than you may realize.

Venture Out in the City!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequently visit near campus and home. Pinpoint your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues.

Explore iconic landmarks. Utilize weekends to discover your new city. Visit free museums. Take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view. Stroll aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting slightly lost!

Final Advice Before Embarking on Imperial Student Life

Carry a reusable bag—supermarkets and stores often impose charges for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket—umbrellas won’t shield you from the wind.

Accept unexpected events—they lead to great stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented—everyone does initially.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on day one.
