The city appeared vast, noisy, and incredibly fast-paced. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to stress. Here’s some guidance to aid your transition to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, ensuring you can savor your new city life.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had received on arrival.

The first priority: secure accommodation

Prevent costly hotel expenses by booking accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime choices disappear quickly. Strive to live close to campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travels to morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: managing the essential details

Upon your arrival in London, prioritize these crucial tasks:

Money transfers – International students require a trustworthy, economical method for transferring funds from their home country. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide better currency exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Data is essential for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and a data plan shortly after arriving.

Bank account – Some banks request a UK address; however, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater well to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – This card provides access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Retrieve it at your earliest convenience.

The initial week at Imperial is vital

Your inaugural week at Imperial is fundamental. It’s the period you will meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society stalls. Your initial week sets the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, my unfamiliarity with the Tube and buses resulted in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was memorable but quite chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses cost-effectively.

Walking is still the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. Uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.

Identify your comforting locations

London can initially be emotionally overwhelming. Finding a comforting area can be beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence, where I visit daily to unwind. My second favorite place is the O2, just a 10-minute distance away, where I enjoy movies weekly.

Locate your own comforting spots, whether it’s a cafe, a bookstore, or a bench by the river. These places provide relaxation and a chance to reset.

And remember to explore!

Get to know the neighborhoods around campus and your accommodation. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and roam without a set plan. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from getting a little off track!

Final pointers before you immerse yourself into Imperial student life

Carry a reusable bag – Stores often impose charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas don’t hold up well against wind-driven rain.

Participate in unique events – They create wonderful stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – Everyone experiences that at first.

You don’t have to have it all figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus trip and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/ (

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was a significant experience.
