The city felt immense, noisy, and bustling. I found myself disoriented with only a suitcase and Google Maps. If you’re on the verge of this experience, rest assured. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling in before your time at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new life in the city.

Whether you get here weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish had been available to me.

Secure your accommodation

Steer clear of costly hotel stays by organizing lodging early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The top choices are claimed quickly, so strive to locate a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes.

Key administrative tasks

Once settled in London, address these essential tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective means to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut are useful for better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one promptly for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Set up an account for your transactions and part-time work earnings.

Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Pick it up as soon as possible.

First week at Imperial is vital

Your initial week at Imperial is crucial for your student journey. Connect with flatmates, fellow students, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies.

Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to engage. I forged strong friendships during campus excursions and society events. Your first week shapes the trajectory of your university experience.

Navigate London wisely

During my first week, I struggled to comprehend the Tube or buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. Don’t make that mistake. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to save on travel costs.

Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense. Seek out a haven, such as a park, cafe, or bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge. My personal favorites are a local park and the O2 for films.

Discover the city

Become acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to dining places.

Visit iconic sites, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from exploring spontaneously.

Final pointers for starting at Imperial

Get a reusable bag – stores charge for disposable ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas fail in the wind.

Join in on unique events – they make for great stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – that’s common initially.

You don’t need to have every detail sorted out from the start. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For further insights into my experiences, explore my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was a daunting experience for me.
