The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling, leaving me feeling swamped with merely a suitcase and Google Maps. If you find yourself in a similar predicament soon, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, so you can fully savor your time in the city.

Whether you’re arriving a few weeks ahead or just before the term kicks off, here is the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure accommodation

To prevent high hotel costs, ensure you arrange your lodging early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the best choices disappear quickly. Aim to locate a residence close to your campus or a convenient Tube line, as lengthy commutes can be difficult with early morning classes.

Administrative essentials: getting sorted

Once you’re settled in London, there are several essential tasks to address:

Handling money transfers – as an international student, finding a dependable and economical method to send money from home is vital. Services like Wise or Revolut can assist you in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.

Acquiring a UK SIM card – having mobile data is crucial for navigating a new city. Get a UK SIM card and a data plan shortly after you arrive.

Opening a bank account – some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Secure a bank account quickly for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Receiving your student ID card – this card facilitates access to campus buildings, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it as early as possible.

The initial week at Imperial is vital

Your first week at Imperial plays a key role in shaping your student experience. It’s a moment to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and sign up for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel shy, make an effort to engage. I did, and I ended up meeting some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the tone for your university experience.

Navigating London: travel wisely

During my first week, I struggled to understand the Tube and buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London for exploration. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – don’t replicate my experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to make traveling on the Tube and buses more budget-friendly.

Walking remains a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. London has numerous hidden treasures that you’ll uncover by wandering.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally taxing, particularly at first. Finding a comfort zone is beneficial – for me, it’s the park close to my home. I visit daily to unwind. My second comfort location is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch films weekly to relax.

Discover your own spots, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to help you recharge and reset.

And make sure to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequent near campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee spots.

Iconic landmarks are definitely worth a visit. Dedicate your weekends to exploring your new city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the sights, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your best memories will arise from moments of getting a little lost!

Final words of advice before you dive into Imperial student life

Utilize a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective during windy weather.

Participate in unique events – they can lead to fantastic stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was at the start of my journey at Imperial.
