With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain of where to kick things off. If this is in your future, don’t fret. Here’s how to set up your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, ensuring you can relish your time in the city.

No matter if you come weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had gotten.

Top priority: find accommodation

Prevent costly hotel bills by securing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime locations get booked fast. Strive to find a place close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to reduce lengthy travel times for morning classes.

Administrative essentials: key tasks

Upon your arrival, tackle these important tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, look for a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one right away to avoid being stranded without data for navigation.

Bank account establishment – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. You will require an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it without delay.

Significance of the initial week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 clubs and societies, and immerse yourself in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to engage. I formed friendships with some of my closest companions during campus explorations and society booths. This week lays the foundation for your university journey.

Travel wisely in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and walked nine kilometers across the city. Prevent this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for affordable travel.

Walking remains a fantastic way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your relaxation spots

London can be overwhelming, so it’s important to have a comfort zone. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for weekly cinema nights. Find your own locales such as a coffee shop, bookstore, or riverside bench to unwind and recharge.

Explore the city!

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for scenic views. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from unplanned excursions.

Last pointers before starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof coat since umbrellas struggle against the wind.

Join in on unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented at the beginning; it’s completely natural.

You don’t have to have everything sorted from the start. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I began. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London at first felt daunting due to its enormity and rapid lifestyle.
