Stepping into London for the very first time was a bit much. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and filled with energy. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you\u2019re gearing up for this, there’s no need to stress. Here\u2019s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks ahead or just before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the counsel I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

First and foremost: secure your living arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your accommodation as soon as possible to avoid pricey hotel expenses. I was lucky, though not everyone shares that fortune, as the top choices get snapped up quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for those early classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: organizing essential matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon arriving in London, tackle these essentials right away:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, find an economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one straight away for internet access and navigation in your new surroundings.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are swift and cater well to students. Create an account for your daily purchases and part-time job deposits.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 vital for accessing campus, utilizing library facilities, and receiving student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial holds great significance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is essential. It\u2019s the time for meeting flatmates, classmates, and potential buddies. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I developed strong friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers through London. It was a memorable yet hectic experience. Don\u2019t fall into the same trap. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for budget-friendly travel. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city\u2019s hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally taxing. Having a go-to place is beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park where I go to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I treat myself to a movie weekly. Seek out your own comfortable locations, such as a cafe or bookstore, to recharge and relax.<\/p>\n

    And make sure to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you often visit near campus and your residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots. Experience iconic landmarks, check out free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from embracing a little adventure.<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before you jump into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren\u2019t reliable in strong winds.<\/li>\n

    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel lost \u2013 it’s a common experience at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don’t have to have all the answers on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
