With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London prior to starting your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you’re landing weeks in advance or just before the semester commences, here’s the guidance I wish I’d had when I first arrived.

Secure Accommodation

Avoid expensive hotel expenses by organizing your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best options are snapped up quickly. Target a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes to early morning lectures.

Administrative Essentials

After reaching London, tackle these necessities:

Money Transfers – As an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective means to transfer money from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide good exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Acquire one promptly to avoid being without data while navigating a new environment.

Bank Account – Some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for your transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID Card – Vital for accessing campus locations, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as possible.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

The first week is pivotal for your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and opt for those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and formed close friendships during campus tours and society booths. The first week establishes the atmosphere for your university adventure.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

During my first week, since I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably.

Walking remains the ultimate way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, unveiling hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfort Spots

London can be quite overwhelming, especially at first. A comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I take time to unwind daily. Another spot is the O2, just ten minutes from my home, where I indulge in a movie weekly.

Seek out your own comfort locations, such as a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

Dive In!

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods around campus and your residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite food or coffee destinations.

Tour iconic landmarks, discover free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting slightly lost!

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

Get a reusable bag – stores typically charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective against wind.

Attend unique events – they offer fantastic stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone does initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I commenced at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For further insights into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon arriving in London for the very first time, the city appeared massive, noisy, bustling, and somewhat intimidating.
