The city seemed immense, bustling, and rapid. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to undertake this journey, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new urban life.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving early or just before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Your Accommodation

Arrange your housing in advance to steer clear of costly hotel fees. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best options vanish quickly, so aim for a location close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Essential Administrative Tasks

As soon as you arrive, prioritize these actions:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover an economical method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one swiftly for data and navigation in your new locale.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly for students. You’ll require an account for transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – crucial for campus access, library privileges, and student discounts. Collect it without delay.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, attempt to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society stalls. This week will establish the foundation for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I couldn’t navigate the Tube or buses, so I wandered nine kilometers to explore. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is still an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Discover Your Safe Spaces

London can feel emotionally taxing. Having a comforting place is beneficial – mine is a local park. I visit it daily for relaxation. Another favorite is the O2, just a short ten-minute journey, where I enjoy movies weekly. Identify your own havens, such as a café or bookstore, to decompress.

Get Out There!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around campus and residence. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining establishments. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from unplanned explorations.

Final Recommendations

Carry a reusable bag – stores impose charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas can be ineffective in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events – they create memorable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s typical initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you are reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For additional insights into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imper

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was an astonishing experience.
