With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s guidance on how to acclimate to London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.

Regardless of whether you come weeks in advance or just before classes begin, here’s the advice I wish I had known.

Secure your accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by arranging your stay in advance. I was lucky, but options vanish swiftly. Aim to find a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: key essentials

Once you arrive in London, take care of these key tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away to avoid being without data and getting lost.

Bank account – digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are prompt and cater to students. Open one for daily spending and part-time income.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus, using the library, and getting student discounts. Collect it without delay.

The initial week at Imperial is vital

Your first week is fundamental to your student life. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, join in; I made lifelong friends during campus tours and society activities. This week shapes the foundation of your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk. Avoid this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking, however, is a fantastic way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Discover your cozy spots

London can be intense. Identify a comfortable place such as a park, café, or bookstore to unwind and recharge. My favorites include a nearby park and the O2 for films.

Discover the city

Get acquainted with neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Visit landmarks, museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from slightly getting lost.

Final recommendations before embarking on Imperial life

Carry a reusable bag to avoid paying for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t very useful in gusty rain.

Engage in unconventional events for unforgettable stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented; it’s entirely normal at first.

You don’t have to have everything figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and kick off your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

For more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London felt daunting at first due to its vastness and rapid pace.
