The city felt enormous, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If this is about to be your journey, don’t fret. Here’s how to integrate into London life ahead of starting at Imperial, ensuring you relish the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s some guidance I wish I had.

Secure accommodation first

Steer clear of expensive hotels by organizing your lodging early. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The prime options disappear quickly, so strive for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to dodge lengthy commutes.

Important life logistics

Once you’re in London, tackle these important tasks:

Money transfer – as an international student, discover a trustworthy method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one promptly for data access and navigation in your new city.

Bank account – online banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and friendly for students. You’ll require an account for transactions and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – vital for campus entry, library access, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as possible.

Maximize your first week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Take part in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Navigate London efficiently

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and wound up walking nine kilometers throughout London. Prevent this by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s concealed treasures.

Establish your comfort areas

London can be daunting, so identify a comfort zone. Mine is a nearby park where I retreat to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another preferred spot for films and relaxation. Find your own havens, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, for moments of tranquility.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with your campus and nearby areas. Locate local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining places. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy the scenery from a red double-decker bus. Some of your finest memories will emerge from spontaneous exploration.

Final thoughts for starting at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to eliminate charges for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are ineffective in gusty conditions.

Participate in unconventional events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t be discouraged if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/international

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was an intense experience.
