The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t panic. Here’s a guide to acclimatizing to London before beginning your studies at Imperial, so you can relish your new urban life.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving several weeks ahead or right before the semester, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given.

Secure Housing

Prevent high hotel expenses by arranging accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but others may not be. The prime choices are snatched up quickly, so aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube station to minimize lengthy travels for morning classes.

Crucial Life Administration

Upon your arrival, take care of these important tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, find an economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – make sure to acquire a UK SIM card promptly to have data for navigation.

Bank account – some banking institutions require a UK address, but online banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – this allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Significance of the First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time you connect with flatmates, peers, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led organizations and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged lasting friendships through campus tours and society booths. This week sets the foundation for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

In my inaugural week, unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable but hectic experience. Avoid my misstep. Acquire a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses economically. Walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover Your Relaxation Spots

London can initially feel overwhelming. Identifying a comfort zone is beneficial. Mine is a nearby park where I unwind daily. Another is the O2, a short 10-minute walk away, where I catch movies weekly. Seek out your own favorite spots, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and rejuvenate.

Explore the City

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues. Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your best experiences will arise from a bit of wandering off course.

Final Suggestions Before Joining Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag – shops frequently impose charges for disposable ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fail against the wind.

Participate in unique events – they create fascinating stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at first.

You aren’t required to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when beginning at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For additional insights into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Contributor

<p class="imp-post__

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was intimidating.
