The city felt vast, noisy, and incredibly dynamic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t be concerned. Here’s my guidance to assist you in adjusting to London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new urban experience.

No matter if you arrive weeks early or just ahead of term, here’s what I wish I had been told when I first landed.

First priority: secure housing

Book your accommodation early to steer clear of high hotel costs. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The most desirable locations get snatched up quickly! Try to find a place close to campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy travel times for early classes.

Essential life tasks: getting the basics in order

Once you arrive in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

Money transfers – if you’re an international student, look for a reliable and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one promptly for data and navigation in your new neighborhood.

Bank account – some banking institutions require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Open an account for your daily expenses and part-time income.

Student ID card – vital for access to campus facilities, library services, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your initial week at Imperial is key

Your first week at Imperial holds significant importance. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re somewhat reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I formed strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Mastering London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I didn’t grasp the Tube or buses, which resulted in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains the best method to soak up the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures as you stroll around.

Discover your serene spots

Initially, London can feel emotionally intense. Having a go-to comfort area is beneficial – mine is a park near my residence, where I relax every day. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another favorite place where I enjoy weekly movie screenings.

Seek out your own comforting locations, be it a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the riverside. These environments can provide a retreat in the bustling city.

And remember to discover!

Familiarize yourself with your neighborhood around campus and home. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues.

Explore iconic attractions, visit free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and meander without a particular destination. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering aimlessly!

Final advice before diving into Imperial student life

Get a reusable shopper – retailers often charge for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well in windy conditions.

Accept invitations to unique events – they lead to memorable stories.

Don’t stress if you’re feeling lost – it’s a common experience at first.

You don’t need to have everything worked out right from the start. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was at the beginning of my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/ (Opens in a new Window)

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in.
