The city felt vast, bustling, and fast-moving. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to ease your transition into your new life in London prior to starting at Imperial, ensuring you fully savor the adventure of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you come a few weeks ahead of schedule or right before the semester kicks off, this is the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First Priority: Find Accommodation

Prevent the cost of hotels by securing accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but luck isn’t universal, as the prime options tend to disappear quickly. Strive to locate a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to eliminate lengthy travel times for morning classes.

Crucial Life Setup

As soon as you land in London, there are several critical tasks to handle quickly:

Financial management – As an international student, it’s vital to discover a trustworthy and economical way to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help avoid unfavorable exchange rates.

Acquiring a UK SIM card – Without internet access, maneuvering through an unfamiliar area or country can be tough. Get a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you arrive.

Opening a bank account – Although some banks necessitate a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establishing a bank account is fundamental for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.

Obtaining your student ID card – This card is essential for entering campus facilities, libraries, and for accessing student discounts. Secure it at your earliest convenience.

Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you tend to be reserved, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I formed some of my closest friendships during campus explorations and society events. Your first week shapes the foundation for your university path.

Intelligent Travel in London

In my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses economically.

Nevertheless, walking remains the best way to experience the city and its culture, unveiling numerous hidden treasures to discover.

Identifying Comfort Locations

London can be emotionally taxing, especially at first. Having a comfort location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go daily to relax. My second spot is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.

Seek out your own comfort locations, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These places offer essential relaxation and downtime.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequently visit around campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favored food or coffee stops.

Tour famous landmarks, enjoy free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from spontaneous ventures.

Final Guidance for Starting at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to evade charges for single-use ones in stores.

Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas often prove ineffective against the wind.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost initially; it’s a normal situation.

There’s no requirement to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you are already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For further insights into my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imper

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was an incredibly intense experience.
