Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in settling down in London before you begin at Imperial, so you can truly enjoy the city.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you arrive weeks prior or just before classes commence, here\u2019s what I wish I had known right after arriving.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Secure Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The most desirable options get taken quickly, so look for a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Administrative Tasks: Essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once in London, tackle these essentials promptly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 As an international student, seek a trustworthy method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 Acquire one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks, such as Monzo or Starling, are quick and friendly to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Your First Week at Imperial Matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your initial week at Imperial is vital for meeting flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. This week shapes your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting Around London: Travel Wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or the buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable but a bit chaotic. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover the city\u2019s hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover Your Safe Spaces<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London may feel overwhelming at first. Find a comfort zone, like a park, caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a riverside bench to relax and recharge. My go-to spots include a nearby park and the O2, where I unwind weekly.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Adventure Awaits!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food or coffee joints. Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and aimlessly wander. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting slightly lost.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Last Tips for Kicking Off at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren\u2019t very effective in the wind.<\/li>\n<li>Join unique events for unforgettable stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented; it\u2019s completely normal at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted from day one.
