The city seemed enormous, noisy, and fast-paced. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you’re experiencing something similar, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before beginning your journey at Imperial, enabling you to savor the city.

Whether you come weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, this is the advice I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.

The first step: securing accommodation

To steer clear of costly hotel stays, arrange your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The best places disappear quickly, so aim to locate a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early lectures.

Administrative tasks: addressing the essentials

Once you’re in London, focus on these priorities:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly to ensure you have data for navigation in an unfamiliar area.

Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time employment payments.

Student ID card – vital for accessing university buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as early as possible.

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal

Your initial week at Imperial is essential. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I made some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.

Navigating London: travel wisely

<pDuring my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in walking nine kilometers across London. It was an experience, but chaotic. Don’t make the same error. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, with numerous hidden treasures to uncover.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. Having a go-to spot helps – mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly for relaxation.

Discover your own comfort spots, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside seat, to assist you in soothing and recharging.

And don’t forget to go on adventures!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred food or coffee venues.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting a bit lost!

Final pieces of advice before diving into Imperial student life

Use a reusable bag – shops often charge for single-use ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against wind.

Attend unique events – they provide great stories to tell.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at the beginning.

You aren’t expected to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already further ahead than I was when I started at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London story one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/ (Opens in a new Window)

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was a lot to take in.
