The city felt enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to go through a similar experience, there’s no need to stress. Here’s how to acclimate to London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to enjoy what the city has to offer.

Whether you land weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Prioritize Finding Accommodation

To avoid pricey hotel stays, reserve accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but quality options can be snapped up swiftly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Handle Necessary Life Admin

Take care of these important items shortly after you arrive in London:

Money transfers – as an international student, utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for cost-effective transfers.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly.

Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus, using the library, and receiving student discounts.

Make the Most of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved; it establishes the tone for your university experience.

Be Smart About Traveling in London

During my first week, I walked nine kilometers around London due to misunderstanding public transport. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for lower travel costs. While walking is excellent for uncovering hidden treasures, rely on public transport for longer journeys.

Discover Your Comfortable Spaces

London can be intense, so locate a comforting spot. Mine is a local park and the O2 for movies. Your haven might be a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spaces allow you to unwind and recharge.

Explore the City

Get to know the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food spots. Visit notable landmarks, free museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of your fondest memories will come from wandering a bit off track.

Final Advice for Beginning at Imperial

Use a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective in strong winds.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already a step ahead of where I was. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing My arrival in London was initially quite daunting.
