Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can embrace the city.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First Priority: Find Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Steer clear of expensive hotel fees by securing accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that experience. The prime choices vanish quickly! Strive for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes for early classes can be challenging.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Key Life Administration<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As soon as you land in London, tackle these essentials without delay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 As an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 Navigating an unfamiliar city is hard without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan promptly after your arrival.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account establishment \u2013 Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Create an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 This is crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Imperial&#8217;s Initial Week is Significant<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The first week at Imperial is crucial for your experience as a student. It\u2019s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re introverted, make an effort to join in. I did and encountered some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Smart Navigation in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my initial week, I didn\u2019t grasp the Tube or buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus travel.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains an excellent way to absorb the city\u2019s culture and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can be emotionally intense at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie weekly.<\/p>\n<p>Identify your own places, be it a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spots provide a much-needed escape.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Explore the City!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Familiarize yourself with the frequently visited areas surrounding campus and your home. Locate the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite food or coffee venues.<\/p>\n<p>Visit notable landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your finest memories will stem from getting a little lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final Tips Before Fully Engaging in Imperial Life<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Carry a reusable bag \u2013 Shops often levy charges for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 Umbrellas aren\u2019t effective against windy conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in unusual events \u2013 They create fantastic stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be concerned if you feel disoriented \u2013 It\u2019s common at the onset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial.
