With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to begin. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t be concerned. Here’s my guidance to assist you in settling in London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new urban existence.

Whether you show up weeks in advance or just in time for classes, here’s the insight I wish I had upon my arrival.

Secure accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel bookings by organizing your housing early. I was fortunate, but that’s not the case for everyone. The top choices disappear quickly, so strive for a location near your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early lectures.

Administrative tasks: essentials to take care of

Once you arrive in London, promptly tackle these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy, economical method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one straight away for data and navigation in an unfamiliar area.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and student-oriented. Set one up for daily spending and any part-time job income.

Student ID card – crucial for campus entry, library access, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.

The initial week at Imperial is essential

Your first week at Imperial is significant for your student experience. You’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, encourage yourself to get involved. I did and formed close friendships through campus tours and society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers through London. It was memorable but chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares. Walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense. Having a comforting location helps – mine is a nearby park where I retreat daily to unwind. The O2, just ten minutes away, is my second favorite spot for weekly movie evenings. Seek out your own locations, like a cafe or bookstore, where you can relax.

Explore the city!

Familiarize yourself with your campus and local areas. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Tour iconic landmarks, free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus. Some of your finest memories will arise from unplanned discoveries.

Last tips before attending Imperial

Use a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.

Get a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective in the wind.

Participate in unique events – they create great anecdotes.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s common initially.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was daunting; the city appeared vast, noisy, and swift.
