The city was expansive, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on how to start. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need for concern. Here’s how to acclimatize to London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wished I had received.

First and foremost: secure your accommodation

Book your place to stay early to dodge pricey hotel fees. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime choices disappear swiftly. Aim to reside close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy travels for early lectures.

Administrative tasks: handling the necessary basics

Once you’re in London, take care of these essentials without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a dependable method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one quickly for data and navigation in your new environment.

Bank account – modern banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-oriented. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time job deposits.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

The initial week at Imperial is pivotal

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. It’s the time when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 clubs and societies and engage in what piques your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, motivate yourself to take part. I did and formed lasting friendships through campus tours and society gatherings. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card early and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs.

Walking remains an excellent method to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your favorite spots

London can feel daunting, particularly at first. Identify a comforting place, like a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and reset. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for films.

And make sure to explore!

Familiarize yourself with your campus and nearby areas. Locate the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining spots.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus, and meander without a specific agenda. Some of your best experiences will arise from getting slightly lost.

Final pieces of advice before immersing in Imperial student life

Get a reusable bag – stores typically charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very practical in windy weather.

Embrace unconventional events – they make for great tales.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – this is normal at the beginning.

You won’t have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By <a href="https://blogs.imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time felt immensely daunting.
