The city appeared enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. Equipped with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself facing a similar scenario shortly, don’t be concerned. Here are some tips to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before commencing your journey at Imperial, so you can relish the adventure of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or moments before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wished I had received upon my arrival.

First and foremost: secure your accommodation

Avoid the steep prices of hotels by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the finest options get snatched up quickly. Try to find a residence near your campus or close to a convenient Tube line to prevent long commutes for early classes.

Administrative tasks: addressing essential needs

Once you touch down in London, make these tasks a priority:

Handling money transfers – as an international student, securing a trustworthy and economical method of transferring funds from your home nation is vital. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

Acquiring a UK SIM card – having internet access is essential for navigation. Get a UK SIM card with a data plan shortly after you arrive.

Opening a bank account – certain banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly toward students. Set up a bank account for everyday transactions and any part-time job payments.

Obtaining your student ID card – this is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and eligible discounts. Collect it as soon as feasible.

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal

The inaugural week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s when you’ll get to know flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, encourage yourself to engage. I did, and I connected with some of my closest companions during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week sets the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to trek nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Avoid making my mistake. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses affordably.

Walking remains an excellent way to experience the city and its culture. You’ll unearth hidden treasures by exploring on foot.

Establish your comfort zones

London can be mentally taxing, especially at first. Discovering a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a park nearby where I frequent daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute stroll from home, where I catch movies weekly to relax.

Identify your comfort zones, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or bench by the river. These spaces provide an opportunity to unwind and recharge.

And remember to explore!

Get acquainted with the commonly visited areas near your campus and residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred locations for food or coffee.

Explore famous attractions and dedicate your weekends to discovering the city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander without a set plan. Some of your finest memories will arise from getting a little lost!

Final pointers before you plunge into Imperial student life

Carry a reusable bag – retailers often charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective against rain driven by wind.

Participate in unconventional events – they frequently lead to the most memorable stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s entirely normal at the beginning.

You don’t need everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one bus ride and trip to Tesco at a time.

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite daunting.
