Stepping into London for the first time was a bit much\u2014everything felt excessively loud and fast-paced. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt out of place. If you’re about to go through this, don’t stress. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning at Imperial, so you can relish your new city life.<\/p>\n

No matter if you arrive weeks ahead or just prior to your term, here are the tips I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

Secure Your Living Arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Avoid costly hotel expenses by arranging accommodation in advance. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck. The finest options get taken up quickly, so try to live close to campus or a reliable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative Tasks: Important Items to Organize<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you’ve settled in London, take care of these vital items:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers: As an international student, consider using apps like Wise or Revolut for economical money transfers.<\/li>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and possible friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I found great friends during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting Around London: Travel Wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I didn\u2019t grasp the Tube or bus systems and ended up walking nine kilometers through London. While it was an experience to remember, it\u2019s not the best idea. Get a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking still offers a great opportunity to explore and uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Discover Your Relaxation Spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be intense. Identify a favorite spot where you can unwind. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for weekly movie nights. Find your own places, whether it’s a cozy cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to recharge and relax.<\/p>\n

    Go Exploring!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Pinpoint your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries. Visit iconic attractions, roam free museums, and savor the city’s offerings. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering a bit off the beaten path.<\/p>\n
