The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, fret not. Here’s how to get your new life in London set up effectively before you commence at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.

Whether you arrive several weeks early or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not always the case for everyone. The best living spaces disappear quickly, so aim for something close to your campus or along a dependable Tube route to minimize lengthy travels.

Life admin: getting the basics in order

Upon arriving in London, take care of these basics:

Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy method to send funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to secure data and navigation.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodate students well. You’ll need an account for transactions and to receive part-time work payments.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus, utilizing the library, and obtaining student discounts. Ensure you get it at the earliest opportunity.

Your first week at Imperial is key

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal. Connect with your flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you’re naturally reserved, challenge yourself to join in on events. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society setups. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. It was a memorable experience, but not the best way to get around. Obtain a Student Oyster card for discounted Tube and bus fares. Walking, however, remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Discover your favorite spots

London can feel intense at times. Identify comforting places, like a nearby park or the O2 for movies. These locales offer you a chance to unwind and recharge. Find your own personal havens, whether a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench.

And don’t skip the exploration!

Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Check out renowned landmarks, free museums, and take a double-decker bus ride. Some of your most cherished memories will be made from unplanned adventures.

Final tips before diving into Imperial student life

Carry a reusable bag – shops charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t great in the wind.

Participate in unique events – they provide excellent stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – that’s completely normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To delve deeper into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite an experience.
