When I arrived in London for the first time, it struck me as massive and overbearing, with everything appearing excessively loud and rapid. With just a suitcase in hand and Google Maps as my guide, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London before beginning your journey at Imperial, enabling you to make the most of your fresh experience in the city.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you\u2019re getting there weeks ahead of time or just before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To prevent costly hotel bills, arrange your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that luxury, as the prime options vanish swiftly. Aim for a location near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: sorting out the vital necessities<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As soon as you land in London, focus on these tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, find a trustworthy and budget-friendly way to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one promptly to ensure you have data for navigation in unfamiliar areas.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this is crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it at your earliest convenience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is critical<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is key to your student experience. It\u2019s the time when you\u2019ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you’re a bit introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society stands. Your first week will set the foundational tone for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London to sightsee. It was chaotic yet unforgettable \u2013 don\u2019t replicate my mistakes. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses affordably.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains a great way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, revealing hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intensive, especially at the start. Finding a comforting spot is beneficial \u2013 mine is a park close to my residence. I go there daily to unwind and rejuvenate. My second sanctuary is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I relax with a weekly film.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own comforting places, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spots are essential for relaxation and recharging.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the areas you frequent around campus and your home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

    Visit iconic landmarks and spend weekends uncovering the city. Explore free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from getting a little lost!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before you immerse yourself<\/strong> in student life at Imperial<\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores typically charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t always stand up to the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unconventional events \u2013 they often lead to great stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s perfectly normal at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything figured out from day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
