The city felt extensive, noisy, and energetic. Equipped only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I was a bit lost on where to start. If this is what you’re facing, there’s no need for concern. Here’s my guidance on acclimating to London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can relish the city.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving early or just before the term begins, here’s what I wish I had been aware of.

Secure Accommodation First

Prevent high hotel costs by booking accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone enjoys that privilege. Look for a location close to campus or a dependable Tube line to steer clear of lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Important Life Essentials

At the start, take care of these important tasks:

Money transfers – As an international student, identify an economical method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – Obtain one right away for mobile data and navigation.

Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer a swift, student-friendly experience. A bank account is essential for handling transactions and receiving payments for part-time work.

Student ID card – This grants entry to campus facilities, libraries, and discounts for students. Make sure to pick it up quickly.

Maximize Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re a bit reserved, make an effort to join in. I forged deep friendships during campus tours and society fairs. This week shapes the foundation of your university journey.

Navigate London Efficiently

At first, I found the Tube and buses confusing and ended up walking nine kilometers around London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Acquire a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Still, walking offers an excellent way to wander and uncover hidden treasures.

Locate Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing. Having a cozy place can be beneficial. For me, it’s a nearby park where I go each day to unwind. The O2, a mere 10 minutes away, is another go-to spot for relaxation. Discover your own cozy venues, like a cafe or bookstore, where you can recharge.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with areas surrounding your campus and residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining favorites. Explore iconic sites, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for a scenic experience. Some of your most cherished moments will arise from unplanned exploration.

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to bypass charges for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas struggle in gusty weather.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented at first; it’s perfectly normal.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.

For further insights into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in.
