The city appeared enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to face this, don’t worry. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning at Imperial, so you can truly appreciate the city.

Whether you get here weeks in advance or just before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Your Accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel expenses by securing your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best spots get taken up quickly! Aim for a locale close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to bypass lengthy morning commutes.

Vital Life Administration

Once you arrive, tackle these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, find an economical way to send money from your home country. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide advantageous rates.

UK SIM card – crucial for data and navigation in a new environment. Acquire one without delay.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday expenses and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – essential for utilizing campus resources, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial is Key

Your initial week is vital for meeting flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, strive to join in. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I was confused by the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Nevertheless, walking is still a fantastic method to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Locate Your Comfort Spots

London can be emotionally intense. Designate a comforting place, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for films. These areas are essential for relaxation.

Discover the City

Get to know neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore renowned landmarks, free museums, and relish spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished moments will stem from a bit of getting lost.

Concluding Tips for Beginning at Imperial

Use a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas don’t work well in windy conditions.

Attend unique events for unforgettable adventures.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented at first; it’s completely normal.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/life-at-imperial/" rel

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was initially a lot to take in.
