The city appeared expansive, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here are some tips to assist you in acclimating to London before your time at Imperial begins, helping you enjoy your new environment.

Whether you are arriving weeks ahead or right before the semester kicks off, here’s what I wish I had known when I first arrived.

Secure Your Accommodation

It’s important to arrange accommodation early to steer clear of costly hotel bills. I was lucky, but not everyone experiences the same, as the best places get booked up quickly. Try to find a location close to your campus or on a reliable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early morning classes.

Administrative Essentials to Organize

When you get to London, make sure to promptly take care of these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a dependable, budget-friendly method to transfer funds. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide good exchange rates.

UK SIM card – make sure you have mobile data for navigation in a new area. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.

Bank account – while some banks may require a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly options. Open an account for your daily spending and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – this allows access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your experience as a student. It’s the time you’ll connect with flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and become a member of those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re on the shy side, make an effort to get involved. I did and found lifelong friends during campus tours and society events. Your initial week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.

Navigate London Wisely

During my initial week, I didn’t grasp the Tube system or the buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across the city. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Avoid my error by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover Your Safe Spaces

London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. Discovering a comforting location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I unwind daily. My second refuge is the O2, just a 10-minute trip away, where I watch films weekly.

Identify your own comforting places, such as a coffee shop, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequently visit near campus and home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee destinations.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for scenic views, and meander without a specific agenda. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from those moments of getting a little lost!

Final Recommendations Before Joining Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – stores often impose charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas offer little protection against rain driven by wind.

Participate in unique events – they create fantastic stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling initially.

You don’t have to have it all figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

<footer class="imp-post

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was initially quite daunting.
