Stepping foot in London for the very first time was an intense experience. The city felt immense, noisy, and full of energy. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s how to establish yourself in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can fully embrace your new urban life.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the start of term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish someone had shared with me.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your living arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by booking housing ahead of time. I was fortunate, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. The prime spots disappear quickly! Aim for a location close to campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Life admin: organizing the vital necessities<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, manage these key essentials:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide attractive exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 vital for data and navigation. Obtain one shortly after arriving.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 some banks require a UK address, but online banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Open an account for routine transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this is essential for access to campus, library services, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is paramount<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is a pivotal time. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Register for activities that catch your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if shyness holds you back, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and forged meaningful friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I was clueless about the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Don\u2019t follow my example. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and bus system.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You\u2019ll uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.<\/p>\n

    Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense, particularly at the beginning. Having a comfort zone aids in coping. Mine is a nearby park where I unwind. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute trip away, where I catch films weekly.<\/p>\n

    Locate your own comfort spots, such as a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or bench by the river. These locations assist in helping you relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And remember to venture out!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Become familiar with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks. Use weekends to delve into your new city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will come from exploring a bit aimlessly!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before you dive into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Grab a reusable bag \u2013 stores charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Buy a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas struggle against the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Say yes to unusual events \u2013 they make for great stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel out of place \u2013 everyone does initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have it all sorted out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment, get your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
