Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to begin. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s how to set your new life in London in motion before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can savor the city.

Whether you’re arriving early or right before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure your accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel stays by booking your accommodation well in advance. I got lucky, but good options vanish quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube route to minimize long commutes for early lectures.

Administrative tasks: key essentials to sort

Once you’re in London, promptly take care of these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective way to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and friendly for students. Open one for your daily transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – crucial for campus entry, library access, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal

Your first week at Imperial is key to your student journey. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society activities. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and walked nine kilometers to explore. Avoid this fate by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for lower travel costs.

Walking remains an excellent method to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Discover your cozy spots

London can be intense. Identify a cozy spot, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My favorite haunts are a local park and the O2, where I relax weekly.

Adventure awaits!

Familiarize yourself with your campus and nearby areas. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining establishments.

Explore renowned landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus. Many of your best experiences will arise from spontaneous escapades.

Final advice for starting your Imperial journey

Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t hold up against wind.

Participate in unique events – they lead to memorable stories.

Don’t panic if you feel a bit lost – it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already making progress. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was a lot to take in; the city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling.
