The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar circumstance, there’s no need to be anxious. Here’s how to acclimate to London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to appreciate your new life in the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had at my disposal.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your lodging promptly. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The top choices vanish quickly. Target a location close to campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes to morning lectures.

Essential Life Admin

As soon as you arrive, focus on these tasks:

Funds transfer – International students require an affordable method to transfer money. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Data is vital for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan right away.

Bank account – Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time job remunerations.

Student ID – Crucial for gaining entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it without delay.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

The first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I met some of my dearest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains a superb way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense. Find a comforting location, like a nearby park, to unwind and recharge. My second favorite place is the O2, where I relax with a movie each week. Discover your own nooks, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench.

Get Out There!

Acquaint yourself with the areas surrounding campus and your residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and go-to dining spots. Tour iconic sites, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will originate from getting slightly lost.

Final Advice for Beginning at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – Stores charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas aren’t effective in the wind.

Join unusual events – They make for fantastic stories.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – It’s a common experience at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite daunting.
