Stepping foot in London for the very first time was quite an experience. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re on the brink of this adventure, don’t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you adjust to London prior to commencing your journey at Imperial, so you can relish your new city life.<\/p>\n

No matter if you arrive weeks ahead of schedule or just moments before the term begins, here is the counsel I wish I’d been given.<\/p>\n

Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by arranging your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. The top choices disappear quickly, so seek a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to bypass lengthy commutes to morning classes.<\/p>\n

Essential administrative tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon your arrival in London, tackle these essential tasks promptly:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one swiftly to ensure you can access data for navigation in a new city.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 while some banks require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time employment payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this permits access to campus facilities, the library, and various student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is important<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is crucial for your student life. Meet roommates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re reserved, endeavor to get involved. I did, and it led to forming close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Navigating London efficiently<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across the city. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains a fantastic way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be quite intense. Identifying a comfort zone is beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another beloved spot for enjoying movies and relaxing.<\/p>\n

    Locate your own comfort areas, such as a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and reset.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee spots.<\/p>\n

    Explore well-known landmarks, visit free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and meander without a set agenda. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from those moments spent getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Final advice before starting at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Bring a reusable bag \u2013 stores often charge for disposable ones.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas are ineffective in windy conditions.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they create memorable stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t worry if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone experiences that early on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don’t need to have everything sorted from day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
