I was uncertain about where to begin, just equipped with a suitcase and Google Maps. If you find yourself in a comparable circumstance, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before your studies at Imperial, enabling you to relish the city.

Whether you come weeks in advance or right before classes start, here’s the counsel I wish I had received.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel expenses by arranging your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone has the same experience. Seek a place close to campus or near a dependable Tube route to prevent lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Handle Important Life Tasks

When you arrive, take care of these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – vital for data and navigation. Acquire one right away.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly for students. Open one for transactions and receiving part-time job wages.

Student ID card – important for utilizing campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is key for connecting with flatmates, peers, and making friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, encourage yourself to get involved. I forged strong friendships during spontaneous campus tours and club fairs. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I walked nine kilometers across London because I was unfamiliar with the Tube and buses. Don’t make the same error. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is still excellent for discovering hidden treasures and embracing the culture of the city.

Identify Your Relaxation Spots

London can be intense. Find a comfortable place, like a park, café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can unwind and recharge. My personal favorite spots include a nearby park and the O2, where I relax weekly with a film.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Find supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite dining spots. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering without a specific plan.

Additional Tips for Life at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are ineffective in gusty weather.

Take part in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented at first; it’s entirely normal.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out right away. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Inhale deeply, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus trip and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/life-at-imperial/" rel

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was initially quite daunting with its expanse, noise, and speed.
