Stepping into London was quite an experience, with its enormity and rapid rhythm. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about my first steps. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t stress. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to relish the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re arriving weeks ahead or just in time for term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I’d been given.<\/p>\n

Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Avoid costly hotel expenses by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the top options fill up fast. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to reduce long travel times.<\/p>\n

Administrative essentials: what to manage<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon your arrival in London, take care of these fundamentals without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an overseas student, locate a trustworthy method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide great rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one quickly to ensure you\u2019re not stranded without data.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling set up swiftly and are student-friendly. Establish one for everyday transactions and part-time income.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 crucial for accessing campus, utilizing the library, and availing student discounts. Make sure to collect it soon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is essential<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your inaugural week is crucial for connecting with flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, joining in can foster lasting friendships.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I ended up walking nine kilometres around London due to misunderstandings with the Tube and buses. Avoid this mistake by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking is still excellent for uncovering hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Locate your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense. Identify a comforting space, such as a park, caf\u00e9, or bookstore, to unwind and reset. It\u2019s more beneficial than you might realize.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with your new neighborhood, including grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Visit iconic sites, free museums, and indulge in spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit off course.<\/p>\n
