With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to enjoy the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term commencing, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by organizing your lodging early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime choices disappear quickly. Strive to reside near your campus or a dependable Tube line, since lengthy commutes can be challenging with early classes.

Life logistics: managing essential tasks

Once in London, promptly tackle these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide advantageous exchange rates.

UK SIM card – connectivity is vital for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.

Bank account – some institutions necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday expenses and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as promptly as possible.

The inaugural week at Imperial is paramount

Your initial week at Imperial is essential for your student experience. It’s when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and formed close friendships during campus tours and society stalls. Your first week establishes the framework for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, which resulted in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – don’t replicate my experience. Secure your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent method to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, discovering hidden treasures along the way.

Identify your go-to spots

London can be emotionally intense, particularly at first. Having a refuge is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go daily to decompress. My second spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly to unwind.

Discover your own comfort places, like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

And don’t forget to venture out!

Familiarize yourself with the areas around campus and home that you will frequent. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the view, and meander without a plan. Some of your finest memories will stem from getting a little lost!

Final pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

Utilize a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against the wind.

Participate in unique events – they make for great stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone does at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial – so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

<footer class="imp-post

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time, the city felt vast, noisy, fast-moving, and daunting.
