Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you\u2019re getting ready for this experience, don’t stress. Here\u2019s my guidance to assist you in settling into London prior to commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can relish the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you land weeks in advance or right as the semester starts, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had been given.<\/p>\n

First off: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Skip costly hotel expenses by organizing housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone enjoys that privilege. The top choices go fast! Seek accommodation near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.<\/p>\n

Getting the basics in order<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, take care of these important items without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, locate a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 navigating a new area is difficult without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and friendly for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time work.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is vital<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is key. It\u2019s when you connect with flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to delve into over 350 student-led clubs and organizations. Even if you\u2019re reserved, make an effort to get involved. Some of my closest friendships developed during campus tours and society activities. This week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    <pDuring my first week, I wasn\u2019t familiar with the Tube or bus systems, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Don\u2019t make the same error. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares. Walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in London.<\/p>\n

    Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense at the start. Having a comforting location can be beneficial \u2013 mine is a park close to my home, where I go daily to unwind. The O2, only a 10-minute distance away, is another place where I relax while enjoying a movie. Identify your own comfort zones, like a caf\u00e9 or bookstore, to recharge and refresh.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Become acquainted with your most-frequented locations around campus and your residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred food or coffee outlets. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the experience. Some of your best memories will come from wandering about spontaneously.<\/p>\n

    Essential advice before diving into<\/strong> imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Get a reusable bag \u2013 stores charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don’t hold up against strong winds.<\/li>\n
    • Embrace unusual events \u2013 they create wonderful stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t be concerned if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s common at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
