When I first arrived in London, the city seemed vast, noisy, fast-moving, and somewhat daunting. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about how to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here\u2019s my guidance to help you acclimate to London before your time at Imperial begins, so you can truly appreciate the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you show up weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here\u2019s the insight I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First and foremost: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of spending a fortune on hotels by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the prime options disappear quickly. Try to find a place near campus or on a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy travel times for early classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon your arrival, focus on these vital tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 having data is essential for navigation. Get a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as you can.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this allows you access to campus buildings, the library, and student discounts. Secure it at your earliest convenience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is vital for your university experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week determines the vibe for your university life.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or the buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid this by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Nonetheless, walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel overwhelming at first. Having a comfort area is beneficial. Mine is a nearby park where I relax. The O2, only 10 minutes away, is another location where I enjoy unwinding with a film. Discover your own havens, like a cafe, bookstore, or bench by the river, to decompress and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with the surroundings of campus and your residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred food or coffee joints. Visit iconic sites, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the scenic views. Some of your fondest memories will stem from getting a little lost.<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Utilize a reusable bag \u2013 shops impose a fee for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don’t fare well in the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Join unusual events \u2013 they often lead to great stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s entirely normal at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      There’s no need to have everything figured out on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I first began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
