The city felt enormous, noisy, and incredibly fast-paced. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to worry. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to starting at Imperial, enabling you to appreciate the city.

Whether you come weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your living situation ahead of time. I was lucky, but great options can vanish swiftly. Aim for a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early classes.

Key administrative tasks

As soon as you arrive, take care of these important tasks:

Money transfers – International students require economical methods for transferring funds. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Vital for data and navigation. Obtain one as soon as possible.

Bank account – Digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish one for daily transactions and part-time job deposits.

Student ID card – This is essential for utilizing campus amenities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Acquire it without delay.

Your inaugural week at Imperial

Your first week holds significant importance for your experience as a student. Make connections with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies and sign up for those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to engage. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your initial week will set the pace for your university adventure.

Navigating London wisely

Initially, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was unforgettable but rather hectic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.

Walking remains the finest way to uncover the city and find hidden treasures.

Locate comforting spaces

London can feel overwhelming. Identify a comfort zone like a park, café, bookstore, or riverside bench to unwind and recharge.

Get out there!

Acquaint yourself with areas surrounding your campus and residence. Discover nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining spots.

Tour iconic attractions, visit free museums, and hop on a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from moments of getting a bit lost.

Final thoughts

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t very effective against wind.

Participate in unique events for some amazing stories.

Don’t fret if you’re feeling disoriented; that’s completely normal.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out from the get-go. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/l

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was quite an experience.
