Upon arriving in London for the first time, I found it immense and somewhat daunting. The city was noisy and energetic, and I felt disoriented with only a suitcase and Google Maps. If you’re about to embark on this journey, have no fear. Here\u2019s my guidance to help you acclimate to life in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can appreciate the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you come weeks in advance or just before the semester starts, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had been given.<\/p>\n

Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotel charges by arranging your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. Seek a place near your campus or a reliable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Essential life management tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, tackle these essentials promptly:<\/p>\n

  • Funds transfer \u2013 as an international student, discover a budget-friendly way to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 having data is vital for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you land.<\/li>\n
  • Banking \u2013 digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and cater to students. Open an account for your everyday transactions and part-time earnings.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID \u2013 this is essential for accessing campus services, libraries, and student discounts. Ensure you collect it without delay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The significance of your first week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It\u2019s when you meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re introverted, make an effort to join in. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society functions. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to me walking nine kilometers across London. Don\u2019t emulate my mistakes. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel. Walking is still an excellent method to explore and unearth hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel overwhelming at the outset. Identifying a go-to location is beneficial \u2013 for me, it\u2019s a park close to my home where I relax daily. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another venue where I unwind weekly with a film. Seek out your own favorite spots, be it a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to assist you in unwinding and recharging.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods you frequent around campus and your home. Find the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred food or coffee shops. Experience iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from unplanned escapades.<\/p>\n

    Final suggestions before embarking on your Imperial journey<\/strong><\/h3>\n
