With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to stress. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before your journey begins at Imperial, allowing you to truly relish the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks beforehand or right before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had been given upon my entry.

First Priority: Find Housing

To avoid expensive hotel costs, sort out your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime choices are taken quickly. Aim to reside close to your campus or near a reliable Tube line to prevent lengthy travel times for morning classes.

Key Administrative Tasks

As soon as you arrive in London, tackle these important tasks:

Money Transfers – As an international student, seek a trustworthy way to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Obtain a UK SIM card with data to effectively navigate your new environment.

Setting Up a Bank Account – Some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly for students. Establish an account for daily spending and part-time job earnings.

Get Your Student ID Card – This card allows access to campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it promptly.

Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for enhancing your student experience. It’s the period to meet flatmates, classmates, and possible friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if shyness holds you back, strive to engage. I did and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. The initial week shapes the tone for your university adventure.

Smart Commuting in London

During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to my unfamiliarity with the Tube and bus systems. Learn from my experience and obtain a Student Oyster card, applying for the 18+ discount for reduced fares.

Nevertheless, walking remains one of the finest ways to soak in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures along the journey.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing at first. Discovering a comfort zone is advantageous – mine is a nearby park I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, where I indulge in a weekly film.

Pinpoint your own solace spaces, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to help you relax and recharge.

Explore and Uncover

Get acquainted with the frequently visited locales around your campus and residence. Find your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Check out renowned attractions, visit free museums, and enjoy a trip on a red double-decker bus. Some of your finest memories will stem from unexpected adventures.

Final Suggestions Before Fully Embracing Imperial Life

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas may not withstand the wind.

Join unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t fret if you initially feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling.

There’s no pressure to have everything sorted on day one. If you are reading this, you’re already more prepared than I was when entering Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-im

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite daunting due to its enormity, noise, and speed.
