The city appeared vast, lively, and somewhat daunting. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I had no clue where to kick things off. If you find yourself in a similar position soon, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to support your transition into your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to embrace the experience of being new in the city fully.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving a few weeks in advance or just shortly before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish had been given to me upon my arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation

To avoid expensive hotel expenses, start looking for a place to live as soon as possible. I was lucky, but not everyone has the same fortune, as the best options get snapped up quickly. Strive to find a place near your campus or along a dependable Tube line, since long travels can be tough for early morning classes.

Essential Life Logistics to Address

When you get to London, tackle these essential items without delay:

Money Transfers – As an international student, you’ll require an economical method to send money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Navigating a new area can be tough without data. Make sure to acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.

Establish a Bank Account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Set up an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID Card – This card provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial Matters

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I pushed myself and made some of my closest friends during campus tours and at society stands. Your first week establishes the pattern for your university journey.

Smart Travel in London

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Prevent my misstep by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses affordably.

Nonetheless, walking remains an excellent way to absorb the city’s ambiance and culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by meandering around.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be quite emotionally taxing, especially at the onset. Having a comforting place is beneficial – for me, it’s the park close to my home. I go there daily to unwind. My second comfort spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly to relax.

Find your own refuges, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to recharge and find calm. It is more advantageous than you might expect.

Explore Your Surroundings

Get familiar with the areas you’ll frequently visit around your campus and residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Check out iconic landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for scenic views, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your most memorable experiences will come from getting a little lost!

Final Suggestions Before Joining Imperial

Bring a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective against wind.

Participate in unique events – they create unforgettable stories.

If you feel lost, don’t fret – it happens to everyone at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

Discover more about my experiences,

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was an incredible experience.
